CBI FILES CHARGE SHEET AGAINST A FORMER POLICE OFFICIAL OF ASSAM GOVERNMENT IN A CASE OF ALLEGED ETHNIC VIOLENCE

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a charge-sheet in the court of Special Judicial Magistrate, Bongaigaon (Assam) against a former police official of Assam Government u/s 153-A, 182, 211 of IPC and Section 27 of Arms Act in a case of alleged ethnic violence.

CBI had taken up the investigation of 8 cases including the instant case relating to the incidents of alleged ethnic violence in certain places of Assam on the request of the Assam Government and further notification from Govt. of India. These cases were earlier registered by Assam Police.

Investigation has revealed that the former police official accidentally sustained gunshot injury on 19.7.2012. However, by suppressing the true facts, he allegedly got registered FIR No.210/12 through his brother (private person) at Police Station Kokrajhar (Assam) on 20.7.2012 against one person of a community on the allegations that the said person had fired at and injured him. On his alleged directions, bandh call was given for 20.7.2012 during which 4 persons of the other community were apprehended and lynched / killed on his alleged orders. The alleged acts of the former police official proved detrimental to public order & peace in the area and resulted in large scale ethnic violence in Assam between two communities in which a large number of innocent persons were killed and properties worth crores of rupees destroyed.

After thorough investigation, a charge-sheet has been filed against the accused.

The public is reminded that the above findings are based on the investigation done by CBI and evidence collected by it. Under the Indian Law, the accused is presumed to be innocent till his guilt is finally established after a fair trial.
